President’s
Opening Remarks
- Richard C. Kim

It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I take on the role
of President of the San Diego Intellectual Property Law Association (SDIPLA) for
the 2002-2003 fiscal year. In the past seven years that I have been a member of
this organization, including the past three years as a member of the
Board of
Directors, I have seen the SDIPLA grow to over 475 registered members. Thanks to
the dedication and leadership of my predecessors and the Board members that
served under them, the SDIPLA has grown to be among the largest intellectual
property bar organizations in the country. As I have gotten to know many of
SDIPLA’s members I have come to realize the excellence and strength of the San
Diego IP community. I am both humbled and proud to be part of such a great
community.
This year, as always, a primary goal of the SDIPLA is to
continue its long-standing tradition of providing valuable continuing legal
education to its members by securing top-quality, nationally recognized speakers
to address the most current issues in intellectual property law. Another goal
this year will be to “give back” to San Diego by assisting organizations that
play a vital role in our community. In this spirit, the SDIPLA is planning to
host its First Annual Charity Golf Tournament sometime in the spring of 2003
(still in the planning stages), with all profits to benefit the San Diego
Volunteer Lawyers Program (SDVLP).
Additionally, at this year’s SDIPLA Holiday Party scheduled for December 5th,
the SDIPLA will recognize at least one individual who has made significant
contributions to the San Diego community, particularly in the area of
intellectual property.
The SDIPLA Board is continuing to work hard to provide
improved and expanded services to its members. As many of you know, last year,
the Board set up various committees such as the Awards Committee, Events
Committee, Sponsorship Committee, Editorial Committee and Amicus Committee, to
improve SDIPLA’s ability to address the needs and desires of its members.
Although startup has been slow, these committees are becoming rooted and will
play an important role in the future operation and effectiveness of the SDIPLA.
I look forward to an educational, productive and exciting
2002/2003 fiscal year. On behalf of the SDIPLA Board, thank you for your
continued support and participation in our fine organization.
