ELDER LAW

Through its newly established Elder Law Team, SDVLP provides advice and representation to senior citizens living in San Diego County. Eligible seniors receive assistance on a variety matters including consumer protection and landlord-tenant issues, estate planning and trust administration, insurance issues, conservatorship, elder-fiduciary abuse and other civil law matters. Presently, clients are referred primarily by Adult Protective Services. As its resources expand, SDVLP will accept referrals from other sources. FEDERAL PRO BONO PROJECT AND CIVIL RIGHTS PROJECT

The Federal Pro Bono Project is a joint effort of the United States District Court, SDVLP and participating law firms and lawyers to provide free legal assistance to indigent plaintiffs in meritorious civil rights actions in federal court. The client must file a claim in propria persona (appearing for oneself without an attorney) before the federal court will refer the case to SDVLP for legal assistance.
 

HEALTH & WELFARE ADVOCACY PROJECT

The Anson Health & Welfare Advocacy Project provides legal assistance in the areas of Medi-Cal, County Medical Services, mental health services, CalWORKs, foster care, social security and SSI, general relief, and bilingual education and special education. The project focus is on significant legal issues through impact litigation, community education and policy advocacy. Applicants for service should contact SDVLP at (619) 235-5656, extension 123.
 

IMMIGRATION LAW

The Immigration Law Project assists undocumented immigrants who are eligible for legal status in the United States under various immigration law provisions. In addition to the Immigration Law Services for Children, SDVLP also provides assistance in political asylum and issues involving battered immigrant women. IMPACT LITIGATION

Impact Litigation has the potential to affect a large segment of the community. SDVLP services in this area are provided on a case-by-case basis. The Executive Director assesses all applicants for services and refers meritorious cases to a pro bono panelist or law firm for ongoing representation. LAW LIBRARY PROJECT

The Law Library Project is a collaboration of SDVLP and the San Diego County Public Law Library to assist unrepresented litigants in obtaining legal information and advice. A general advice legal clinic is conducted every Monday evening and a second legal clinic is offered on Wednesday afternoons at the central San Diego County Public Law Library. It is anticipated that this service will eventually expand to Law Library branches throughout San Diego County. For more information, call (619) 235-5656, extension 113.
 

NON-PROFIT COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS

SDVLP provides legal services and technical assistance to non-profit community organizations and groups whose primary purpose is to serve the poor and who do not have the financial resources to retain private counsel. Applicants for service are required to submit requests in writing to the attention of the Executive Director and include literature and other materials which document the program's actual or proposed activities and the requested legal services.
