The San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program, Inc. (SDVLP) was
incorporated as a private, non-profit,
charitable organization in 1983 for
involving the private bar in the delivery of pro bono civil legal services to
indigent San Diego County residents. It has since developed into this area’s
major pro bono legal resource, with more than 3,000 registered volunteers
including attorneys, paralegals, law students and others who last year donated
23,532 hours of pro bono legal services at an estimated value of $3 million to
help deserving San Diegans.
Our services are directed to meeting the legal needs of the most disadvantaged
and vulnerable members of our community, including victims of domestic violence,
the elderly, children who have been or are at risk of abuse and neglect,
children with special education needs, persons with HIV/AIDS, broken families,
homeless veterans, persons fleeing from civil unrest in their country of origin
and others. It also provides legal services to non profit community
organizations and groups whose primary purpose is to serve the poor but haven't
the financial resources to hire an attorney.
SDVLP is sponsored by the San Diego County Bar Association, the
Lawyers Club of
San Diego, the Bar Association
of Northern San Diego County and the
Consumer
Attorneys of San Diego. Its work has been recognized by numerous organizations
and agencies at the local, state and national levels. Recent accolades include
the National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations’ Public Service Award, the
Department of Aging & Independence Services’ Starfish Award, AIDS Walk San
Diego’s first annual Partnership Award, and the Tom Homann Law Association’s
Friend of the Community Award.
