FAMILY LAW

SDVLP's umbrella of family law programs is its largest service area. The Family Law Program's major target population is adult and child victims of domestic violence and families with children at risk of abuse, neglect and domestic disruption.

Direct Representation Component

Clients must meet financial eligibility guidelines and their legal problem must comply with SDVLP's priority service areas which include:

Domestic Violence Prevention Project

Victims of domestic violence receive assistance in completing and filing restraining orders, related legal relief, and referrals to social support agencies and shelters. Services are provided at project clinics located throughout the County. Financial eligibility requirements are not imposed and assistance is provided on a walk-in basis.

Family Justice Center Collaborative

The Domestic Violence Justice Center, funded in part by the City of San Diego, combines the resources of the City Attorney=s Office, San Diego Police Department, City of San Diego and numerous public and private agencies to provide comprehensive services in a centralized location to domestic violence victims. SDVLP participates as a service provider in representing victims at the restraining order hearing and assisting in obtaining and enforcing custody, support and restraining orders. Clients must meet SDVLP=s financial eligibility criteria. Services are provided on an appointment basis Monday through Friday.

Mediation Project
Mediation services are provided for pro per family law litigants whose cases are filed at the downtown Family Court Building, East County or South Bay Courts. This project is funded in part by the County of San Diego. Services are provided on an appointment basis and applicants must meet SDVLP's financial eligibility criteria.

Legal Clinic Program
SDVLP operates a legal advice/assistance clinic in collaboration with the Vietnam Veterans of San Diego and the Department of Child Support Services as follows:

Vietnam Veterans of San Diego
Monthly clinic assists non-custodial parents, primarily Vietnam era veterans, in handling their child support obligations.
