Director, Intellectual Property

Metabasis Therapeutics, Inc. is a San Diego-based biopharmaceutical company employing exceptionally talented scientists to discover and develop drugs targeting metabolic pathways.   We seek a patent attorney/agent to conduct and coordinate with outside patent counsel:

• All aspects of patent prosecution from eliciting invention records from inventors, drafting patent applications to prosecuting in front of the PTO, including directing outside and foreign counsel

• Assist and inform management on corporate intellectual property issues, conducting freedom-to-operate, infringement analysis and other post-issuance activities
• Perform patent due diligence studies for licensing opportunities, and review IP agreements

The candidate should have a MS or Ph.D. in Chemistry (preferably Organic), be a registered U.S. patent attorney, and preferably have a J.D. or equivalent and be a member of a state bar (preferably California).  The ideal candidate will have 5 - 7 years patent law experience, preferably at a law firm or a pharmaceutical or biotech company.  Ideally, the candidate will have broad IP experience, including patent, compound and literature searching, scientific literature analysis, patent preparation and prosecution, litigation, and opinion drafting & counseling. We need a team-oriented self-starter with strong communication, analytical, computer, and organizational skills, able to work under deadline pressures with keen attention to detail.
